How to Utilize Employee Incentives to Support Learning

You’re looking to create an employee learning program, but you’re not sure how to utilize incentives to support the educational component of the course. Your team wants to know how the training will help them in their careers, so the answer to “what’s in it for me?” shouldn’t be an actual reward, but rather a piece of knowledge or skill that will benefit them in the long run.

Here are a few tips to use incentives to support learning:

1. Communicate the Value of the Content

It’s great to send communications out to your team and get them excited about training, but make sure you prioritize the value of the learning as the primary theme of your message.

2. Make the Content Engaging

If you give your employees a long, multi-paragraph, overly-technical training document, they’re not going to be excited about completing it. Switch up your mediums, utilize gamification, and add a competitive element to help employees engage with the content - that way, they walk away knowing it deeper.

3. Attach Rewards Thoughtfully

Including an automated award at the end of your course is a quick way to get your employees to simply click through the program to get to the end. Adding rewards after certain milestones will help teammates to utilize the knowledge they learn to obtain the award. For example: attaching an award after obtaining a 100% on a knowledge quiz.

4. Reward Must Match the Action

Make sure the reward given matches the gravity of the action performed. Giving someone a week-long vacation after completing a simple human resources quiz makes any future awards mean that much less, and your training will be less effective moving forward.

Save time, money, and frustrations by using these key learnings to make your courses that much more effective.
